With a new week underway, here are five of the events and news items our team of reporters is tracking.

City to discuss future ARPA funds

The Schenectady City Council on Monday will discuss how to proceed in allocating the remaining funds the city received as part of the American Rescue Plan Act. Lawmakers have allocated a bulk of the money to various city projects and towards projects spearheaded by local nonprofits, leaving around $10 million still left to be doled out. Lawmakers are expected to discuss whether to accept another round of applications from organizations seeking a portion of the funding as originally planned, or to proceed with the dozens of applications the city collected last year when the process of allocating the funds began.

Replacement begins Monday of bridge damaged by Irene, Lee

Replacement of the Guy Park Avenue bridge over Dove Creek in Amsterdam begins Monday. The structure was damaged during Tropical Storms Irene and Lee in 2011. Yet, its repair was ineligible for state or federal aid. Though FEMA provided over $2 million to repair Dove Creek’s retaining walls that were damaged during the same storms. Amsterdam funded the roughly $156,000 bridge replacement project in this year’s city budget. Guy Park Avenue will be closed between Steadwell Avenue and entrances to St. Mary’s Hospital until work is complete around Oct. 14. Both emergency room entrances will remain accessible.

Oktoberfest returns

Glenville Oktoberfest is set for Saturday at Maalwyck Park. The music line-up includes performances by Gregory and The Brauhaus Band, Herbie and His Accord-a-Tones and headliners The Bratwurst Boys. Oktoberfest runs from noon – 9 p.m. For more information visit

Union football back at home

The last time the Union College football team played at Frank Bailey Field, on Sept. 10 against Worcester State, the Dutchmen scored their most points ever in a home game — and second-most in a game in the history of a program that spans back to the 1880s — in a 76-7 win.

Saturday’s 1 p.m. home game against Utica likely won’t be that explosive, but it should give coach Jeff Behrman’s 3-0 team a solid test in their final game before the start of Liberty League play. Utica’s roster is heavy with former Section II high school standouts, and former UAlbany quarterback Braeden Zenelovic starts under center for the Pioneers.
