Private-Equity Salaries at Blackstone, KKR, and Bain Capital

Private-Equity Salaries at Blackstone, KKR, and Bain Capital

  • Bain Capital, Blackstone, and KKR are among the largest private-equity firms in the world.
  • Private-equity employees often make six-figure salaries, even at the entry level.
  • Here are the base salary ranges of analysts, associates, directors, and more at these firms.

Bain Capital, Blackstone, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., or KKR — three of the largest private-equity firms in the world based on funds raised in the last five years — are currently recruiting for junior hires who wouldn’t start until 2024.

These private-equity firms, along with others, are accelerating their recruiting timelines to get ahead of their competitors, Insider previously reported. In fact, some began recruitment in August. That’s because the war for talent is expected to continue and high-profile executives, like Tim Ryan, the US chair of the accounting firm PwC, predict it could last for another decade.

To woo promising junior talent, many private-equity firms are offering high salaries. In fact, more than 56% of the 1,011 private-equity employees that Heidrick & Struggles, an executive-search firm, surveyed reported an increase in their base salaries between 2019 and 2020, according to the 2021 North American Private Equity Investment Professional Compensation Survey. Additionally, the study found that the average bonus for an analyst in 2020 was $46,000, but figures ranged between $30,000 and $100,000.

Additionally, some private-equity employees earn carried interest, which is compensation based off a certain percent of a private-equity fund’s earnings that is collected after the minimum return is met. For example, a principal on a $1 billion to $1.49 billion fund earns, on average, almost $5.3 million in carried interest, according to the same survey.

Insider analyzed data from the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification’s 2021 disclosure data for H1-B visa holders to show how much workers can expect to make in base salaries at Bain Capital, Blackstone, and KKR. This data does not include signing bonuses, performance bonuses, or carried interest, and represents data for all divisions of these firms including technology, financial services, and more.
