3.1-3.7 homes in Italy affected by EU Green home directive – English

(ANSA) – ROME, JAN 19 – Some 3.1-3-7 million homes in Italy
will be affected by a proposed European Union directive on Green
homes which Italy is trying to stop because it allegedly puts an
intolerable financial burden on home-owners, Brussels sources
said Thursday.

Between 3.1 and 3.7 million buildings are to be renovated in
Italy by 2033 according to the proposal for a directive on the
energy efficiency of buildings currently being examined by the
European Parliament, the sources said.

The estimates were made on the basis of the European
Commission’s figures.

Premier Giorgia Meloni’s rightist Brothers of Italy (FdI) party
on Friday filed a resolution in the House aimed at stopping the
EU directive on Green homes that it said would hit some nine
million Italian home owners who might be asked to pay large sums
to boost their residences’ energy efficiency in the next 10
years.

“The home is sacred and can’t be touched,” said FdI House Whip
Tommaso Foti.

“Brothers of Italy guards against the European Union’s attempt
to foist on Italy, with the directive on boosting energy
efficiency, a camouflaged property tax that damages the rights
of the owners,” he said.

Other majority parties the League and Forza Italia (FI) backed
FdI’s move. (ANSA).
