NORRISTOWN PA – In what it described as immediate support in a “short-term strategy” to help manage a “homelessness crisis” in Montgomery County, its Board of Commissioners have allocated $1.2 million for increased street outreach and emergency hoteling services.

More than 70 families with children are on a county wait list to get into a shelter, and calls to 2-1-1 from people seeking emergency housing are rising. Both statistics have more than doubled since last year, commissioners learned during their Wednesday (Sept. 15, 2022) meeting. Street outreach teams county-wide are serving about 600 people living in places not meant for habitation, a 32-percent increase, they also were told.

Municipal officials earlier reported homelessness assistance needs are particularly acute in Pottstown and Norristown.

The allocation will expand the county’s “Your Way Home” services by adding three more staff to its homeless street outreach team to respond to people experiencing homelessness throughout Montgomery County, according to the board.

It also includes funding to offer emergency hoteling to children who are sleeping outside, pregnant people, people with medical or behavioral health conditions that put them at risk, and people who are outside during weather emergencies, such as Code Blue.
